Goto Islands

Kyushu, Japan · Remote island, Sea / Beach

Japan's far-western archipelago, where Hidden Christians held on through two and a half centuries of persecution: some fifty wooden, brick and stone churches by the sea, white-sand beaches and grass-covered volcanoes.

Getting there

Ferry or plane — From Nagasaki Port (about 15 minutes' walk from JR Nagasaki Station), Kyushu Shosen runs to Fukue by jetfoil (1h25, 4-6 departures a day, about ¥8,900) or car ferry (3h10, 3 departures, about ¥4,000); there are also 30-40 minute flights from Nagasaki and Fukuoka to Goto-Fukue Airport (15-minute bus to town, ¥310) and the overnight ferry Taiko from Hakata (about 8-9 hours, ¥4,930). For Nakadori (Kamigoto) a jetfoil links Fukue and Narao in about 30 minutes; on the islands a rental car is close to essential because buses are sparse, and typhoons from August to October cancel boats and flights.

Needs an overnight stay: it does not work well as a day trip.
