Getting there

Bus — Long-distance 'Takachiho-go' highway bus (jointly run by Kyusanko and Miyazaki Kotsu) from Kumamoto Station or Sakuramachi Terminal, about 3h, ¥2,700 (only 1 departure a day each way: outbound 9:11-12:19, return 16:57-19:58, advance reservation recommended); there's no realistic long-distance train here. The bus terminal is 2km from the gorge: 30-40 min on foot, taxi (~¥1,000), or e-bike rental.

Doable as a day trip from a nearby base.
