Getting there

Train — From Echigo-Yuzawa, JR Joetsu Line to Muikamachi + the Hokuhoku line (Hokuetsu Express) to Tokamachi, ~1h16 total, ¥650. The Hokuhoku line is a "third-sector" (semi-private) railway: the national JR Pass does NOT cover it and requires a ¥400 supplement, but the JR East Pass (Tohoku+Nagano+Niigata, merged in 2026) covers it in full, explicitly naming Hokuetsu Express among its covered operators.

Doable as a day trip from a nearby base.
