Sado Island

Chubu, Japan · Remote island

The largest island in the Sea of Japan: the Sado Gold Mines (Sado Kinzan), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2024, with hand-dug Edo-era tunnels and mechanized Meiji-era galleries; the taraibune, traditional round boats for a ride around Ogi port; the shipbuilders' village of Shukunegi, with houses built from recycled ship timber; and Ryotsu, the gateway port with its own street layout.

Getting there

Ferry — Sado Kisen ferry from Niigata Port to Ryotsu: fast jetfoil ¥8,250, ~65min, or regular ferry ¥3,570, ~2h30. A private company with no relation to JR, not covered by any train pass. There's no railway on the island: getting between Ryotsu, Aikawa (gold mine) and Ogi (taraibune) is by local Niigata Kotsu Sado bus (e.g. Ryotsu-Aikawa/Sado Kinzan, ~60min, ¥840).

Needs an overnight stay: it does not work well as a day trip.
