Murakami

Chubu, Japan · Town / small city

Niigata's northernmost city, once the seat of the Murakami Domain and Japan's historic capital of salmon culture: the black-walled Edo-period street of Kurokabe-dori; the Sennenzake Kikkawa merchant house, with nearly 1,000 salmon hung from the ceiling during the winter salting season; the Iyoboya Kaikan museum on traditional salmon fishing and curing, with a window onto a live spawning stream; and several local sake breweries.

Getting there

Train — From Niigata City, unreserved JR rapid train (Hakushin line + Uetsu Main Line), ~54min, ¥1,230; a faster alternative on the Inaho limited express takes ~46min for roughly ¥2,120 unreserved. A 100% JR East route start to finish, with no private segment.

Needs an overnight stay: it does not work well as a day trip.
