Tsukuba

Kanto, Japan · City, Mountain

A science city built from scratch in the 1960s-70s, with the JAXA Space Center (a full-scale replica of the ISS Kibo module, free admission), the Expo Center (planetarium and a replica of the Shinkai 6500 deep-sea submersible), and Mt. Tsukuba itself, a twin-peaked sacred mountain with views over the entire Kanto plain and, on clear days, Mt. Fuji.

Getting there

Train — Tsukuba Express, a fully private line (not JR, not covered by any JR pass), direct from Akihabara with no transfer, ~45min, ¥1,280 (fare in effect since the March 2026 increase). Mt. Tsukuba, with a cable car and chairlift to the twin peaks (¥1,300 round-trip), is about a 40-minute bus ride from the station.

Needs an overnight stay: it does not work well as a day trip.
